SUTHERLAND

OVERVIEW

Some backyards are simply spaces. Others become destinations. The Sutherland Project is firmly the latter, a tiered resort-style oasis where Life Outdoors and Pinnacle Pools transformed a sloping suburban block into a private retreat that feels lifted from a luxury getaway.

This was a true collaboration. Pinnacle Pools delivered the centrepiece, a sleek plunge pool with an integrated raised spa, while Life Outdoors built the world around it: the multi-level decking, the elevated outdoor living zone, the pergola, and the clever details that turn a nice backyard into one you never want to leave.

Rather than fight the block's grade, the design leans into it. A generous elevated deck extends off the rear of the home, creating a covered lounging area level with the living spaces. From there, timber stairs with frameless glass balustrading descend to the pool terrace below, where the decking wraps around the pool and spa. The result is a series of connected outdoor rooms, each with its own purpose and effortless transitions between them.

All of the decking is Evalast composite, chosen for its warm timber-look tones and its performance against constant sun, pool splash, and Sydney humidity. It delivers the rich natural appearance the design called for without the sanding and oiling that real timber demands around a pool. The warm honey boards play beautifully against the two other defining materials: the crisp white of the home and pergola, and the dramatic matte black vertical cladding on the deck understructure and feature wall.

Set neatly into the black cladding beside the pool is an integrated outdoor bar fridge, positioned so anyone in the spa or lounging poolside can reach a cold drink without trekking back to the house. A matching flush access hatch sits alongside it, keeping the wall clean and purposeful. It is a small touch with a big payoff, the kind of lifestyle-first thinking that separates a good project from a great one.

Up top, the elevated lounge sits beneath a white pergola with an insulated roof and ceiling fan, making it genuinely usable across the seasons. Furnished with woven lounge chairs, a deep sofa, and a built-in barbecue, it functions as a true outdoor living room. The Sutherland Project shows what happens when pool and landscape are designed as one: a cohesive, multi-level retreat that lives like a holiday.
